In the previous post, we met the Li siblings – an elder cis brother Jie who became a prefecture governor and a younger trans brother X (we call him “X” because his personal name was unknown) who was a legendary soldier. X, a transgender warrior whom “even a horde could not defeat”, conducted his military exploits using his cisgender brother’s identity. The bookish elder brother gained not just an official career through eir trans sibling’s glory, but also gained a lover by transference, as Li Boyuan (1867-1906) relates in the continuation of the tale of the Li siblings:
