In the previous post, we met the Li Jie siblings – an elder cis brother who became a prefecture governor and a younger trans brother who was a legendary soldier. The younger Li, a warrior whom “even a horde couldn’t defeat”, conducted xir military exploits using their cisgender brother’s identity. The bookish elder brother gained not just an official career through eir trans sibling’s glory, but also gained a lover by transference, as Li Boyuan (1867-1906) relates in the continuation of the tale of the Li siblings:
