In 1784, Yuan Mei talks about a need for more gay representation in literature
In 1784, a 69-year-old openly pansexual polyamorous poet Yuan Mei was traveling with his young male student Liu Xiachang[i] in Guangdong province, when the androgynously handsome Liu Xiachang caught the eye of a 17-year-old doorman Yuan Shijin. This eventually led Yuan Mei to write “A poem about Young Man Yuan, composed for Xiachang” [ii]:
